The name means ‘Mountain of iron‘,
The most southwesterly town, lying at the foot of the Ysterberg, owes its existence to the exceptionally rich iron ore discovered in 1919. The red soil bears witness to the enormous treasure in iron. The mine boasts one of the biggest mining shafts in Africa. More than 2 million tons of ore are mined every year and hauled by train to lscor’s iron and steel works.
Game farms and ranches are abundant in the area with the jewel being provided by South Africa’s newest National Park, Marakele. Here, among the highest peaks of the Waterberg, is a haven for elephant, buffalo, rhino and a host of other animal species.
