The railway workshop was turned into a shopping mall that has become a landmark in Durban. They were formerly the Locomotive Shed, the Boiler shed, and the Machine and Erecting Shed. The five large doors on the south facade allowed locomotives to enter the building’s cavernous interior. Note the remarkable harmony of the building’s proportions despite its giant scale. The huge clear spans, designed for a variety of industrial purposes, were remodelled for shopping purposes in 1986.
