Sugar Terminal

Edmund Morewood was the founder of the South African sugar industry. Today  there are seventeen mills producing in  excess of two million tons of sugar per annum.   Two milling groups dominate the milling industry namely; CG Smith Sugar Ltd. and Tongaat-Hulett Sugar Limited.  South Africa consumes about 1,3 million tons of sugar every year.

Raw sugar for export goes to the Bulk Sugar Export Terminal at Maydon wharf  where it  is stored in huge silos awaiting shipment.  There are three silos, 300 metres long and 28m high, with  a total  capacity  of  520 000 tons.  The  raw sugar  is unloaded from  sugar  transport vehicles – both road and rail, through an elaborate system of conveyor belts, and deposited in the silos.  It is then delivered directly onto ships at a r..a~te of 1   000 tons an hour .

NB: Conducted tours are available daily at the Sugar Terminal. Phone for appointment.
