There was an urgent need in Pietermaritzburg for a convening place for the Supreme Court as well as for the newly constituted legislative body of the colony. A building was started in Church Street during 1864 but at one stage there was only a single workman at work on the site. The building was completed in 1871 and the Supreme Court moved in. The court chamber with its red furnishings was then also used for sessions of the Legislative Council. It is today used as administrative building for the Natal Museum.
