Hindu Temple

Most of the Indian population of Durban follow the Hindu religion and the Sri Vaithianatha Easvarar Alayam temple in Umgeni Road is the oldest and largest in South Africa.  Various Hindu festivals take place during the year.    At the Kavady festival  in February and  July, decorated  chariots are drawn through the streets and eventually thrown  into the  Umgeni River as a  sacrifice to the gods.  At Easter the ritual of fire walking takes place at the Umbilo temple.
