The resort of lsipingo is built on a high ridge of sand at the mouth of the river called isiPhingo by the Zulu, their name for the cat-thorn shrubs that grow in this area.
The celebrated Dick King was given land at lsipingo as a reward for his historic ride on horseback form Durban to Grahamstown. He died at lsipingo in 1871. His homestead has been renovated and is now the headquarters of the local traffic department of the Durban• Southern Metropolitan Council.
